Bangladesh to Secure Starlink Internet Deal
Bangladesh is making significant strides toward introducing Starlink’s satellite internet services, aiming to enhance connectivity across the nation, particularly in underserved and remote areas.
On March 25, 2025, interim leader Muhammad Yunus announced that Bangladesh expects to finalize a commercial agreement with SpaceX’s Starlink within three months. This partnership is anticipated to provide reliable internet services nationwide, ensuring uninterrupted access even during political instability. Yunus emphasized that Starlink’s technology would prevent government-imposed internet shutdowns, a concern during previous protests. He also highlighted the government’s commitment to reducing inflation and conducting free and fair national elections between December 2025 and June 2026.
In February 2025, Yunus held extensive discussions with Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, to explore collaboration opportunities for introducing Starlink in Bangladesh. The talks focused on the transformative impact of satellite communications, particularly for the country’s youth, rural women, and remote communities. Yunus invited Musk to visit Bangladesh for the potential launch of Starlink services, an invitation Musk responded to positively.
To facilitate Starlink’s entry, the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has drafted guidelines permitting wholly owned foreign companies to obtain licenses for satellite internet services. This move paves the way for companies like Starlink to operate in Bangladesh. The draft guidelines outline licensing fees, revenue-sharing models, and infrastructure requirements, including establishing at least one gateway system within the country.
Local firms are also collaborating with Starlink to support the establishment of ground earth stations in Bangladesh. These partnerships involve space allocation, construction support, and ongoing infrastructure maintenance. A Starlink delegation has identified several locations of interest, with discussions ongoing regarding site selection and implementation details.
While these developments signal progress, challenges remain, including addressing regulatory compliance, ensuring affordability for consumers, and navigating competition with local internet service providers. Nonetheless, the government’s proactive approach and Starlink’s technological capabilities hold promise for bridging the digital divide in Bangladesh.
