Will throw Muslim MLAs out of assembly after BJP wins Bengal : Suvendu Adhikary
Suvendu Adhikari’s Remarks on Muslim MLAs Sparks Controversy
Backdrop of the Statement
West Bengal is gearing up for its next Assembly elections in 2026. Adhikari’s remarks came in response to the defection of BJP’s Haldia MLA, Tapasi Mondal, to the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC). Adhikari, who was suspended from the Assembly on February 17, accused the TMC government of being “a communal administration” and compared it to the Muslim League.
TMC’s Strong Rebuttal
The ruling TMC reacted sharply to Adhikari’s statements, calling them a form of hate speech. Party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh condemned the comments, stating that targeting elected MLAs based on religion violates constitutional principles and is a criminal offense.
Silence from State BJP Leadership
Interestingly, BJP’s top leadership in West Bengal has chosen to remain silent on the issue. Political analysts speculate that this silence may be an attempt to avoid further polarization ahead of the elections.
Adhikari’s Past Controversial Statements
This is not the first time Adhikari has stirred controversy. After BJP’s performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he suggested dropping the party’s slogan Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas
and replacing it with Jo hamare saath, hum unke saath
. He also dismissed the need for BJP’s minority outreach program.
Implications for West Bengal Politics
With elections approaching, political observers believe that such remarks could impact voter sentiment. West Bengal, a state known for its communal harmony, is now witnessing heightened political tensions.
As West Bengal heads towards elections, it remains to be seen how such divisive rhetoric will shape the political narrative. For more updates stay tuned to Bengal Press.
